Patent foramen ovale PFO and migraine
Migraine Information Leaflet: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) and migraine
The foramen ovale is a small hole between the two upper chambers of the heart that is present during development in the womb. It normally closes after birth but in some people it remains open (patent). This usually causes no symptoms, but tests may show abnormal movement of blood between the normally separate heart chambers. It has been found that closing the hole may help to treat recurrent migraine, although it is not known why.
The leaflet is available as a PDF download, or we can print and post an A5 leaflet for you.
