Young people get migraine too
We know that children of all ages can suffer from migraine. However, it is only in recent years that doctors have become more skilled at recognising migraine in the younger age groups.
Children with migraine often describe their headache as "just sore" (rather than throbbing) and in the middle of the forehead (rather than on the side of the head, as is commonly the case in adults).
Children with migraine may not experience a headache at all, or it may only be moderate and mentioned when questioned. Although a severe headache is common in adults, it is less of a feature in children. If they have some of the symptoms listed below and follow a pattern of attacks, but are well in between, it is likely to be migraine:
|
Increased sensitivity to light, sound, and / or smells |
Abdominal pain |
|
Aches and pains and excessive tiredness |
Dizziness |
|
'Aura' - neurological symptoms such as visual disturbance, confusion, numbness |
Nausea and / or vomiting |
To help parents / carers, teachers and school nurses learn more and be able to support young migraineurs more effectively, Migraine Action has developed three specific information packs. Click on the links below for relevant information and to download resources.
