To help support the 10% of schoolchildren affected by migraine and as part of its 'Young Migraineurs Campaign', national charity Migraine Action has launched new 'migraine lesson plans' for Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The lesson plans aim to help children and young people learn about this extremely common condition and how they can take control if they experience attacks or support friends and peers who may be affected:

  • Key stage 1: 'In the family' - focuses on role play with the migraine adventure animals. (National Curriculum links: Science, Music, PSHE, English, Art and Design, PE (Dance))
  • Key stage 2: 'Looking out for friends' - follows the story of the migraine adventure animals and how friends can support each other when they feel unwell. (National Curriculum links: Science, English. Art and Design, ICT, Geography)
  • Key stage 3: 'Attack!' - asks students to explore the various issues surrounding migraine by creating a computer game to help people understand the condition. (National Curriculum links: English, Art and Design, ICT, PSHE)
  • Key stage 4: 'Moving on' - encourages students to explore the issues relating to migraine via a business simulation and working on a PR campaign

All lesson plans can be downloaded from www.migraine.org.uk/teachers

As childhood migraine can be very different to adult migraine and not all children experience a headache as part of their attacks, the condition can often go unrecognised or be misdiagnosed. To help teachers learn the signs to look out for Migraine Action has also created free information packs for teachers which can also be ordered via the website. Packs for school nurses are also available.  For full information visit www.migraine.org.uk/youngmigraineurs or call 0116 275 8317.
